J’ HE vast majority of renal tumors encountered in the first weeks of life are benign, representing mesenchymal hamartomatous maldevelopment of the fetal kidney.”3 4,6,7,10,17,18 Synonyms for this tumor include congenital mesoblastic nephroma of infancy,4 leiomyomatous hamartoma,’#{176} and that used at the Babies Hospital, fetal renal hamartoma.’8 Complete excision is curative and chemotherapy and radiation therapy are not only of no value but have caused skeletal deformitv2’4”2 in the case of the latter, and several deaths in the former.’o”,’4
