 The National Institute of Informatics (NII) was established in April 2000 as an inter-university research institute of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Informatics is a new comprehensive interdisciplinary study, which covers topics from Natural Sciences and Information Engineering to Humanities and Social Sciences. NII is pursuing a comprehensive and wide-range research program to build the academic field of informatics, with the following seven pillars as the center of its development efforts: information foundation, infrastructure of information systems, software, multimedia, intelligence systems, utilization of information in the research field, and policy for strengthening the ties between information and society.

CiNii是由日本国立情报研究所提供的一个期刊论文、研究纪要、会议论文、图书等学术信息的检索系统。目前CiNii分为CiNii Article和CiNii Books两部分。Cinii Books 是向一般用户开放的1200所日本大学图书馆的馆藏联合目录，可检索150万个作者信息和1000万种约1亿册的馆藏信息。Cinii Article目前收录了366个行业学协会的期刊,另收录87所国立大学、65所公立大学、417所私立大学等共841个教育研究机构的研究纪要，共计期刊和研究纪要7400种。截止目前可检索的论文数已超过1500万篇。它是一个涵盖全学科学术信息的综合数据库，同时也是一个与多个其他机构的数据库链接的统一检索系统。
