Extraction of target components from a slurry using supercritical CO2 is difficult because the slurry will cause no voids in the extraction bed. In the present study, we investigated overcoming these issues by adding random packing. The influences of packing type, packing specification, mass ratio of packing in the slurry, and operation conditions on the extraction of garlic essential oil from slurry were investigated. The optimum conditions were a 1:1 mass ratio of slurry to random packing, an extraction pressure of 25 MPa, an extraction temperature of 40 °C, a resolving pressure of 5 MPa, and a resolving temperature of 35 °C. With the random packing, the percentage yield of allicin was 0.37%, and the extraction time was 90 min. Compared with an extraction conducted without the random packing under the same conditions, random packing increased the extraction yield by 54% and decreased the extraction time by 30 min.
